General Summary
An entry level engineering position for engineers with a minimum of five (5) years related industry experience or minimum one (3) year ABS experience as an Engineer I.
I. Performs engineering design review and analysis assignments normally involving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or science. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, will develop a thorough understanding of policies, methods, and procedures.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (PDR)
1. With minimal or no supervision performs detailed engineering review of plans, as assigned, for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations and contract commitments.
2. Offers technical advice to field operations (surveyors) and other technical offices.
3. Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices but may include moderately complex problems such as the resolution of conflicting design requirements, material standards or coordination of activities among other disciplines.
4. Proposes new approaches to problems encountered and makes recommendations for changes in methods, procedures or designs.
5. Drafts technically accurate and timely reports, and responses to emails, letters, and other forms of communication.
6. Interacts with clients to identify and resolve problems in the area of technical expertise.
7. Prepares accurate and timely weekly reports and billing on all work performed.
8. Communicates the status of the current workload to all appropriate members of the team to ensure the needs of the clients will be met.
9. Works as a team member within the group but may work autonomously most of the time.
10. Implements and maintains ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required (KSAR)
1. Minimum requirement one year experience working as an ABS Engineer I, OR the following are new
hire requirements for university graduates and experienced engineers from industry:
2. B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines
Masters / PhD Graduates with no experience may be hired as Engineer II if degrees are specific to the position.
3. Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software.
4. Exposed to Finite Element Method (course work or supervised research).
5. Good command of the English language.
II. Experienced Engineer from Marine and/or Offshore Industry:
1. Professional or chartered engineer license.
2. A minimum of five (5) years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society; or a minimum of one (3) year as an ABS Engineer I.
3. Additional experience and knowledge achieved from working in the ABS Engineering environment, or other practical industry experience in area of specialization.
4. Demonstrated understanding and ability to apply fundamental classification and quality concepts, practices, and procedures.
5. Expertise required in areas: Stability, statutory, ship & Offshore structures, Operation manual review/preparation. Basic knowledge of Machinery/Electrical/Piping/Process is a bonus.
Knowledge of statutory regulations (SOLAS, MODU CODE, SPS Code, Loadline and Tonnage) is highly desirable.
6. The ability to identify, analyze and propose solutions to problems (i.e., the competence to demonstrate complex problem-solving skills).
7. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. High level communication skills are essential.
8. Ability to work well with others in a dynamic environment.
9. A working knowledge of the ABS Quality & Environmental Management System (internal candidates only).

Working Conditions
Work will normally be performed in an air-conditioned office environment. Occasionally may be required to visit manufacturing plants, remote field sites or go aboard marine vessels or structures. Wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in such occasions. If the work will be performed in confined spaces, the relevant requirements of the confined space entry in ABS Safety Manual shall be complied with. Work will be of a non-manual nature, but the incumbent must be able to walk and climb among equipment and structures.
Reporting Relationships
Will report to a senior level engineer or technical manager.
