Reuters is looking for an energetic journalist to lead our coverage in Qatar. This reporter will provide strong and insightful stories on the tiny but wealthy Gulf Arab state as it tries to move on from a political and economic boycott imposed by larger neighbors ahead of hosting the World Cup in 2022. The successful candidate will have to be multi-skilled, with strong initiative and relish a diverse array of stories. Qatar is a force in investment, energy, media and sport, and an independent-minded Gulf Arab diplomatic power.
Qatar is cementing its position as the world’s biggest supplier of liquefied natural gas, forging new trade partnerships and deepening ties with allies outside the region while restoring ties with Saudi Arabia and other Arab states. Preparations for the World Cup will provide an opportunity for rich multimedia pieces on the desert country.
About the Role As our Qatar Correspondent, you will:
Work closely with our Dubai-based financial and energy teams
Have experience as a reporter who can operate at speed
Break exclusive news
Deliver agenda-setting stories across the file
Be adept at making and cultivating contacts in a deeply conservative society
To be our Qatar Correspondent, you will likely have:
A knowledge of company and financial news will be important, given the country’s aggressive forays into overseas markets.
At least five years reporting experience
Strong initiative, writing and reporting skills
An ability to cultivate contacts and generate ideas that can drive the file forward in original ways
A proven track record of breaking news and teaming up with reporters in the Gulf region for exclusives and enterprise pieces
An ability to shoot photos or video
Fluent Arabic is an advantage
Please note, the deadline for applications is Friday 7th May 2021.
